    President's Message
Welcome to the Rotary Club of Encinitas, California where a dedicated group of Rotarians serve the community and the world. Rotary is a service club and this years motto is Rotary Shares. We share our time and a modest amount of our treasure to help individuals and groups who serve others primarily in the greater Encinitas Area but we don’t stop there. We also work on one or more International Projects every year. Last year we took funds from our clubs fundraisers and got them matched with funds from our District 5340 and then got the combined total matched again with funds from Rotary International to have enough money to bore holes for water wells in Nigeria. The residents there now have clean water to drink and no longer have to be subject to parasites and disease from tainted water. A powerful statement came from a woman in Haiti who told a Rotarian visiting a prior water project, "After Rotary came here, the children stopped dying."

Rotarians around the world carry out service projects in their local communities and abroad that address critical issues such as peace, poverty, hunger, illiteracy, disease, and environmental concerns. The Encinitas Rotary Club has actively participated in such diverse projects as building homes in Mexico with Project Mercy, assisted local residents through the Community Resource Center, supported the work of Rotary International through generous giving to the Rotary Foundation, provided scholarships to deserving college students, supported the YMCA, encouraged high school students to become leaders and to enjoy serving their community through the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) and Interact programs, donated sewing machines to a refugee camp in Africa, supported the activities of Quail Botanical Gardens, honored teachers and peace officers for their service to the community, assisted the Lost Boys of the Sudan and other refugees to be comfortable in the Unites States, and so much more. Each year we evaluate various opportunities to help support our local community through hands on projects and through financial contributions. Last year our District started a program called Rotarians At Work where on one day, April 28, nearly every Rotarian in San Diego County worked on a service project. The Encinitas Club helped to build out and landscape the new facilities for the San Dieguito Heritage Museum. This year we will do another project in April.

Where does the money come from? The people in our club put on two unique fundraisers that have been very successful. The first is the Encinitas Rotary Cup Soccer tournament. We put on a tournament every August where up to 250 youth teams come and compete for the Championship in their age bracket. The second is the Encinitas Rotary Club's Wine Festival held at the beautiful Quail Botanical Gardens. It takes all of our club members to help put these events on and the rewards are satisfying in that our hard work gives us the opportunity to help so many in the community.

Membership in a Rotary club is an enjoyable and satisfying way for men and women to "give back" to their community, their country, and their world for the advantages they enjoy. Rotary clubs are open to every race, religion, and culture, and it is this diversity that makes being a Rotarian such an amazing experience. To be a Rotarian takes some commitment. We meet every Wednesday at the Encinitas Elks lodge at 1693 Windsor Road in the Cardiff-By-the-Sea section of Encinitas. Every Rotarian in our club is also asked to help out on our two big fundraisers and on Rotarians at Work Day. Many come in order to network with our club members. They stay because by giving of themselves, they develop life long friendships, help many and ultimately made their business more successful in the process.

One Hundred and two years ago, Rotary was founded by Paul Harris in Chicago, Illinois, with four original members. Today, we "Celebrate Rotary" as the first, the largest, and the most prestigious international service organization in the world. Rotary has over 1.2 million business and professional leaders in some 31,000 Rotary clubs in more than 167 countries. Did you know that Rotary is responsible for eradicating Polio from the face of the earth? It is still a work in progress but last year there were less than 500 cases reported worldwide.
